In 1991 in New York City , a 11 -year -old girl named Alyssa " Ally " Craig witnessed the murder of his mother on the platform of the subway of New York City , Brooklyn . Ten years later , Ally , who has aged 21 years ( Emilie de Ravin ) is a student at New York University . He lived at home with his father who is very protective , Neil ( Chris Cooper ) , a detective .
Tyler Hawkins ( Robert Pattinson ) is a young man sad and directionless 21 -year -old , auditing classes at NYU and worked in a bookshop . He had a relationship with his father that stretch a businessman , Charles ( Pierce Brosnan ) since his brother ( Michael ) was killed .
